This illustration was inspired by the slow city movement in Italy. "To go" coffees are rarely offered, so you have to sit or stand at the coffee bar to drink. I found this in stark comparison to North America, where the default is paper to go cups. So in the spirit of slowing down, and enjoying the moment, I hand quilted this 8x10 inch image.
All the material started off as white, and in the interest in authenticity I dyed the material with coffee (for the coffee), ink (for the cup, and spoon) and a mixture of coffee, tea and ink (for the background). I also used acrylic paint for the sugar packet. I then hand pieced, hand quilted, then hand embroidered the words.
This was definitely a time consuming piece, but I think it embodies the spirit of the slow city movement that I was inspired by.
